Linen is one of our favorite fabrics for year-round, but it really shines as a summertime fabric. Linen is cool and breathable, easy to care for, dries quickly, and has antimicrobial qualities that make it ideal for warm weather. This month we’ve added dozens of incredible linen fabrics to our collection (along with some old favorites!), so it’s the perfect time to browse our selection and dream up a few new sewing projects to get you through the hottest days of summer.

You’ve found your new favorite linen fabric, now what will you make with it? Not to worry, we’ve got some great ideas for you! With summer in mind, here are a few garment patterns to pair with the lovely linens in our collection.

Linen is wonderful for layering! It’s a great choice for simple shirts like the Hadley Top and the Square Neck Top—these garments will keep you cool and comfortable all day, and are easy to layer with a light sweater or jacket when night falls. Speaking of jackets, the Three’s A Charm Jacket is a quick sewing project and our go-to layer for transforming summer pieces into something office-appropriate. Sew a few cropped jackets in your favorite linen prints and solids to pair with tank tops, t-shirts, and simple shift dresses.

When you can’t (or don’t want to) wear summer shorts, linen pants and skirts are the perfect alternative! The Pegs have a classic shape and will be gorgeous in your favorite solid-colored linen, while the Tania Culottes are a great match for light/midweight linen in solids, prints, or patterns. The Estuary Skirt is our pick for everyday wear, with an elasticized back waistband and a versatile calf length—this garment is so good in a drapey linen/rayon blend!

A linen dress is a must-have when it’s just too hot to wear anything else! Dress No. 1 is one of our most beginner-friendly patterns, and it’s absolutely lovely in any weight or weave of linen. The Azure Dress has pretty gathered tiers, giving it a bit of dimension—the pattern also has options for making the dress into separates! For a summer take on the button-up shirt, choose lightweight linen for a smart, sleeveless Alder Shirtdress.

getting started

If you’re new to sewing with linen, you may find it slightly more challenging than cotton, but it is entirely worth the effort! Start with a basic garment pattern like Dress No. 1 to familiarize yourself with the fabric. Use a universal needleand Gutermann Sew-All thread for machine sewing. Tools like Wonder Clips, a rotary cutter, and Flatter can help you achieve smoother sewing. Take your time to transfer pattern markings, baste as per the instructions, and finish seams neatly for a garment you’ll want to wear all summer long!

To make 100% linen wrinkle less, follow these instructions from Sandra Betzina: Before washing, iron the fabric with the hottest, driest iron possible. Machine wash in hot water and tumble dry on high heat. Remove only when completely dry. This method will result in shrinkage, but small, soft folds will replace the hard creases usually associated with linen.
