Earlier this week we started dreaming up new pieces for our autumn wardrobe, and today we’re back with fabrics you’ll love for fall layers—knits! While we love an outfit incorporating knit fabrics with wovens, today we’ve challenged ourselves to build autumn looks using all knits!

First up, we’re taking a look at the Nova Jumpsuit and its potential as a multi-season layering garment. For multi-season wear, we’ll sew one out of a soft cotton/spandex jersey, and wear it over a long-sleeved Nikko Top in a slinky, comfy wide bamboo knit rib. To complete the look, we’ll choose a colorful sweater knit for a cozy Karine Cardigan.

This pink boucle sweater knit has been on our minds for a minute, and now is the perfect time to make it into a super-dramatic jacket for fall! The Cambria Duster works perfectly with everything, but we especially love it layered with an assortment of lightweight knit dresses—it’s an easy way to coordinate outfits for work or travel. We’ll pair Lodo with a double knit, Meredith with a drapey jersey knit, and Coco with a printed French terry for some great fall looks!

Patterned knits make fun separates for mixing and matching! We love these animal-print rayon jerseys for quick and easy sewing projects like the Elemental Skirt and the Rumi Tank. Feeling bold? Layer these patterned pieces together with a bright, solid-colored bamboo fleece Pearl Cardigan to bring the look together.

We love the Pinnacle Top pattern—it’s so versatile, and perfect for so many fabrics. For fall, we’re planning to make one out of the warmest, softest, sweater knit we have in stock. We’ll pair this boxy sweater with a fitted dress like Heather or Nikko for a fantastic layered look!

Our two-sided polyester sherpa fleece is one of our coziest knits, and one you’ll love sewing with this season! Perfect for outerwear, we’ll use this fabric for patterns like the Nova Coat (now available in kids’ sizes, too!), the Hovea, and the Arlo Track Jacket. This fabric has a warm, fluffy texture, with a back so soft and smooth that you won’t even need a lining!

New to sewing with knits? No serger? Not a problem! Most sewing machines have an overlock or elastic overlock stitch that will make stitching knit fabrics a breeze. Using a rotary cutter will help you cut knit fabrics accurately. You can sew with your favorite all-purpose thread. To ensure successful sewing, you’ll want to invest in some sewing machine needles specially designed for knit fabrics.
