Beyond Basic: Easy Patterns with Beautiful Fabrics

Our collection of beginner-friendly patterns continues to be our go-to for wardrobe basics—simple patterns with clear directions, perfect for sewists of all skill levels. Today we’re branching out with fabric ideas for taking these trusted patterns to the next level. If you’re just getting started sewing garments, some of these fabrics might be new to you, so we’ve included tips for sewing each of them with success!

We love suggesting the 100 Acts of Sewing patterns for beginner sewists, and Dress No. 2 is a must-sew for the season! We often see this dress made up in a plain cotton woven, and we’ve got some extra-cozy fabrics in mind for winter wear. Try wool crepe for a dress that’s lightweight and toasty warm. Choose your favorite corduroy for a velvety texture you’ll love wearing—a lightweight pinwale corduroy will make the most gorgeous dress! 

Helpful hint: Corduroy has a directional weave, or nap, to consider when you’re laying out pattern pieces and preparing to cut your fabric. Take some time to lay out all of the pattern pieces for your size and determine the yardage needed to fit them all—it may be a bit more than the pattern recommends. When you have your prewashed fabric ready, arrange the pattern pieces with the nap oriented down, so if you run your hand down the length of the garment, it feels smooth.

The Stevie Tunic is a great pick for a basic top that comes together in a snap. It’s a perfect match for any light/midweight woven fabric, but we’re especially excited about its potential with linen! Linen gives this simple shape a bit of drape, for a beautiful top you’ll love wearing season after season. 

Helpful hint: Before prewashing your linen, iron the fabric with the hottest, driest iron possible. Machine wash in hot water and tumble dry on high heat. Remove when completely dry. This method (which we learned from Sandra Betzina!) will result in shrinkage, but small, soft folds will replace the hard creases usually associated with linen.

Helpful hint: Sewing lots of layers of fabric together can be tricky. To make everything come together smoothly, use Wonder Clips in place of pins and a Jean-a-ma-jig for smooth sewing. Don’t forget to pick up a fresh jeans/denim needle for your sewing machine!
