It was just last week that we shared a newsletter of additions to our linen collection—and then even more linen arrived! We’re delighted to share a fantastic batch of designer deadstock linen this week—we love it, and think you will, too. With a beautiful assortment of prints, patterns, textures, and weaves, our collection has everything you need for your spring and summer sewing!

Often called sample cuts or designer ends, deadstock fabric is left over from textile mills and/or the fashion industry. Designer deadstock has been a big part of Stonemountain & Daughter since the late 60s, and we have seen interest and excitement grow significantly over the past few years as sewists seek out more sustainable fabric sources.

Through our decades-long connections in the garment industry in NYC, Los Angeles, and across Europe, we’ve been able to bring in beautiful, unique,high-quality fabrics to share with our community of sewists near and far. Our collection includes surplus from production lines and even some experimental fabrics created for top designers! We’re always on the lookout for the very best designer deadstock, and we hope to bring you even more of these fabric treasures throughout the year. Embroidery and decorative weaves are a wonderful way to add visual interest to neutral-colored linens! Garments like the Magic Pants and The Nevis are lovely in linen, and are perfect for a large-scale pattern like our striking linen jacquard. Lightweight yarn-dyed and embroidered linen fabrics are ideal for warm-weather shirts and blouses—we love a crisp, cool Florence Shirt. Our favorite interfacing for lightweight button-up shirts? Silk organza, of course! Give it a quick hand-wash and drip dry, then use it as you would any sew-in interfacing for sheer, lightweight structure.

We can’t get enough of these beautiful blue linens! This lightweight, yarn-dyed plaid will make an absolutely dreamy Sapphire Dress for spring and summer. Linen twill has the look of denim with the texture and drape of linen—it’s a great choice for a cute pair of Opal Pants, and like denim, it’s an easy pairing with all of your favorite tops! Sheer linen seersucker is a must-have for light layering pieces, and it would make an incredible Saturday Skirt Set! P.S. If you prefer a lining for sheer linen garments, we suggest lightweight wovens like rayon challis and cotton lawn or voile.

We’re loving chartreuse-adjacent greenish-yellows for bold spring and summer looks! Our printed linen is slightly sheer with a bit of texture, a lovely choice for garments like the Siren Sundress and the Alder Shirtdress. Airy, crinkly fabrics like linen gauze and chambray add movement and softness to any garment—we especially love these fabrics for light, breezy garments like the Kaftan Dress.

Linen is one of our favorite fabrics to sew and wear. If you’re new to sewing with linen, you may find it slightly more challenging than cotton, but entirely worth the effort! Start with a basic garment pattern like Shirt No. 1 to familiarize yourself with a new fabric. Use a universal needle and Gutermann Sew-All thread for machine sewing. Tools like Wonder Clips, a rotary cutter, and Flatter can help you achieve smoother sewing. Take time to transfer pattern markings, baste as per the instructions, and finish seams neatly for a linen garment you’ll be super proud of!
