Comfort Meets Style: Knits We Love
March 26, 2026
We’re celebrating Stonemountain & Daughter’s 45th anniversary this month with a look at all the amazing fabrics that make the shop so special. This week, our our exploration of the fashion room continues with a closer look at our collection of knits and jerseys. While the content of knit fabrics has changed over time (thanks to fashion trends and technology), the function of knit fabrics remains the same: to create garments that allow for great fit, motion, and comfort. We’re starting the week sharing a fun group of knits, so keep reading for a closer look at silk jersey, swimwear knits, and lots of stretchy stripes!
silk knits
Add comfort to your dress-up days with our gorgeous designer deadstock silk jerseys! Silk jersey is one of those fabrics that only comes to us as deadstock from the garment industry, so it’s always a treat to have it in stock. Why sew with silk jersey? It’s super smooth and cool with a bit of shine and a nice, heavy drape—the perfect match for dresses like the Pembroke Dress and the Throwback Dress, which are designed to make the most of a fabric’s drape. You can also elevate your everyday look with wardrobe basics like the Chantal Swing Tank Top in a bold silk jersey print!

swim knits
One of the best things about sewing is making garments that fit exactly the way you like, so of course we’re going to encourage you to sew your own custom swimwear! First, choose a pattern like Claudia, Faye, or Cottesloe—we love that these patterns include a few different views so you can mix and match the design elements you like best. Our Thalassa Swimwear Knit is available at a great price and in fashion colors you’ll love—choose one or mix and match your favorites! We also carry swimwear elastic and lining fabricso you’ll have every thing you need to get started sewing your own swimsuit.

stripped knits
We can never resist a classic stripe, so you’ll be delighted to discover dozens of striped jersey knits in our collection! Rayon/spandex jersey is super soft and cool to the touch, a wonderful choice for a Dew Dress or Grafton Top for spring, summer, and beyond. For a twist on standard stripes (see what we did there?), don’t miss our novelty deadstock cotton jersey—it’s perfect for a unique Max Tee that you’ll love adding to your wardrobe rotation.

sewing with success
New to sewing with knits? No serger? Not a problem! Most sewing machines have an overlock or elastic overlock stitch that will make stitching knit fabrics a breeze. Using a rotary cutter will help you cut knit fabrics accurately. You can sew knits with your favorite all-purpose thread. To ensure successful sewing, you’ll want to invest in some ball-point sewing machine needles specially designed for knit fabrics. And if you’d prefer to use a serger, we’ve got the needles, threads, and accessories for that, too!
Knits and jerseys bring a different kind of joy to sewing. There’s something so satisfying about creating garments that move with you, feel good on your body, and become part of your everyday life. Whether it’s a favorite tee, a dress you reach for again and again, or something a little more adventurous like swimwear, knit fabrics open the door to comfort without sacrificing style.
Over the years, we’ve seen how sewing with knits builds confidence in a whole new way. What may feel unfamiliar at first quickly becomes second nature, and before you know it, you’re sewing pieces that fit just right and feel completely your own. It’s that sense of ease and wearability that keeps so many of us coming back to knits as an essential part of a handmade wardrobe.
As we celebrate forty five years at Stonemountain & Daughter, we’re reminded that fabrics may change with time, but the desire to create clothing that feels good and fits beautifully remains the same. From silk jerseys to everyday cotton knits, these fabrics continue to inspire new makers and longtime sewists alike.
We’re so grateful to be part of your sewing journey and to share these fabrics with you. Whether you’re just beginning to explore knits or adding to a wardrobe full of handmade favorites, we hope you feel inspired to try something new. The Mountain is always here to support you, every step of the way.
Thank you and Happy Sewing!
