Welcome back to knits week! This month we’re celebrating Stonemountain & Daughter’s 45th anniversary with a closer look at all the different fabrics that make the store so special. Today’s newsletter features the tried and true knits and jerseys we love sewing and wearing, season after season. These fabrics are easy to sew, and they’ve become essential parts of our everyday lives in the form of comfy t-shirts, leggings, sweatshirts, dresses, and more!
There is something so satisfying about sewing pieces you actually live in, and that’s where everyday knits really shine. These are the fabrics that become your favorite t-shirt, the dress you throw on without thinking, the layer you reach for again and again. They’re not fussy, they’re not complicated—they just work, and they feel good doing it.
What we’ve always loved about knits is how approachable they are. Once you get started, they open up a whole new kind of sewing—one that’s a little more relaxed, a little more forgiving, and incredibly rewarding. You can create garments that move with you, fit just the way you like, and become part of your daily rhythm. It’s a different kind of confidence, and we see it happen all the time.
cotton jersey knits
100% cotton jersey knits are most similar to a traditional t-shirt fabric—lightweight and breathable, with just a bit of mechanical stretch. This style of knit is a great choice for less-fitted tops like the Sportsball Tee, for basic t-shirts, and for clothing for babies and kids. 100% cotton jersey is also a perfect match for garments like the Montana Midi Dress and the Nova Jumpsuit that call for lightweight knits with minimal stretch.

cotton/spandex jersey
Looking for a cotton jersey with a little more stretch? Cotton/spandex jerseyis one of the most versatile fabrics in our collection! Cool, breathable cotton is blended with a touch of spandex, creating a fabric with excellent stretch and recovery—so you can achieve a fantastic fit, every time! We love cotton-spandex jersey for wardrobe basics like Shirt No. 2 and for easy-wear garments like the Jocelyne Polo Dress. It’s also a lovely choice for a lightweight Pearl Cardigan to wear with summer tank tops and sundresses. These knits are our go-to for comfy t-shirts, leggings, underwear, and more!

cotton jacquard knits
If we had to pick a favorite knit from the collection, Mind the Maker cotton jacquard knits would be at the top of our list! Made of 95% organic cotton and 5% spandex, these versatile knits are somewhere between a t-shirt and a sweatshirt knit. These jacquard knits are a perfect match for the Toaster Sweater (we’ve made more than a few!) and would work well with many sweater and sweatshirt patterns. Garments like the Erin Dungarees and the Pogonip Pullover are designed for knit or woven fabrics, so they’re perfect for these opaque, midweight, and moderately stretchy knits.

New to sewing with knits? No serger? Not a problem! Most sewing machines have an overlock or elastic overlock stitch that will make stitching knit fabrics a breeze. Using a rotary cutter will help you cut knit fabrics accurately. You can sew knits with your favorite all-purpose thread. To ensure successful sewing, you’ll want to invest in some ball-point sewing machine needles specially designed for knit fabrics. And if you’d prefer to use a serger, we’ve got the needles and threads for that, too!

As we continue celebrating forty five years, it feels especially meaningful to highlight fabrics that support real, everyday making. Knits are a reminder that sewing doesn’t have to be complicated to be beautiful. Sometimes the most loved pieces are the simplest ones.
