Linen to Love: 45 Years of Fabric, and Still Unfolding 

Earlier this week we shared a group of gorgeous deadstock linen, treasures of our fashion fabric collection! Designer deadstock and linen have been a big part of Stonemountain & Daughter’s history, and we’re delighted to see that these fabrics continue to be favorites of garment sewists. Today we’re back with even more lovely linens to inspire you—while most of these ideas are geared toward spring and summer (inspired by this week’s heat wave, no doubt), linen is truly a year-round fabric, one we love sewing and wearing season after season.

Linen’s pretty drape is a perfect match for dresses and skirts, and we have an amazing assortment of colors and weaves to explore! Choose a favorite two-tone linen or a crisp stripe to add fun detail to simple garments like The Factory and the Azure Dress and make them totally your own. Our chartreuse slub-striped linen has a wonderful texture that would make a fun, summery Evelyn Skirt—it’s sure to become a highlight of your warm-weather wardrobe! Looking for a super-lightweight lining for linen? We love cotton lawn or batiste for just enough structure and opacity.

There’s so much potential for mixing and matching with our two-tone linens! The Heather Blazer in midweight linen is just right for spring- and summertime layering, and is a nice change of pace from your usual cardigan routine. Taking inspiration from the Heather Blazer photo, we’re inspired to create a few linen pieces that could be worn together or separately for lots of great outfit potential. After selecting one linen for the blazer, we’ll choose another for a comfy pair of Opal Pants and a third for an easy, wear-anywhere top like the Stevie Tunic—the makings of a linen mini-capsule wardrobe!

If you’re used to sewing with cotton wovens, you’re definitely ready to start sewing with linen! Like cotton, linen is a perfect match for a universal needleand Gutermann Sew-All thread. Using a non-starch smoothing spray like Flatter will help stabilize wiggly linen fabric for cutting, and Wonder Clips hold everything together even better than pins! To make 100% linen wrinkle less, follow these instructions from Sandra Betzina: Before washing, iron the fabric with the hottest, driest iron possible. Machine wash in hot water and tumble dry on high heat. Remove only when completely dry. This method will result in shrinkage, but small, soft folds will replace the hard creases usually associated with linen.

As we mark forty five years at Stonemountain & Daughter, we’re feeling especially inspired by what’s still to come.
