It’s been a while since we last devoted an entire newsletter to dresses, but with a few special events on the horizon, it’s time to figure out what we’re going to wear! Silk and rayon are two of our favorite dressy fabrics—lightweight with a pretty drape, these fabrics can add drama and elegance to even the most simple silhouette. We’re highlighting some of our favorite fancy fabrics today, along with pattern ideas to help your dream dress take shape.

Long, flowy dresses are the perfect choice for a special occasion! Patterns like the Wilder Gown and the Holyoke Maxi Dress will be amazing in rayon challis or crepe, and the Elodie Wrap Dress is always gorgeous in your favorite flowy silk.

If you can’t have a party dress without ruffles and puffs, here are a few pattern ideas to showcase those dressy details! The Balloon Sleeve Dress is a lovely match for fabrics with a bit of structure and shape, while the ruffles on the Ivieand Farrah dresses are perfect for fabrics with a light, fluttery drape.

We love a versatile garment sewing pattern—a pattern that you can use more than once, for very different occasions! These dress patterns can be anything from elegant to everyday, depending on your fabric selection. Make a Sapphire Dress in rayon challis for a special occasion, and in cotton shirting for everyday. The Roscoe Dress is as lovely in silk crepe de chine or rayon tissue faille as it is in a cotton voile. And the Hope Woven Dress is incredibly versatile—sew one in your favorite sandwashed silk or tencel and one in a yarn-dyed cotton so you’ll have the perfect dress for every occasion!

getting started
Rayon and silk have smooth, fluid qualities that can make them challenging to sew, so we’ve gathered our best tips for your sewing success! Always pre-wash your fabric so there are no surprises—we recommend pre-washing fabric the way you plan to launder your finished garment. Here’s a link to our complete fabric care guide with lots of great info!
Once you’re ready to sew, use all-purpose polyester thread and a fresh sewing machine needle. We suggest using the smallest size needle available, whether it’s Universal (suitable for all fabric types) or Microtex (extra sharp). We also have a Getting Started With Silk notions kit available. Presto Sheer Fusible is a nice interfacing for rayon wovens, and we recommend sew-in silk organza to add soft, lightweight structure to delicate silk garments.
