Make It Your Own
September 28, 2026
Indie sewing patterns have been the focus of our collection for years—these patterns come to us from independent designers across the country and around the world, and include an assortment of on-trend garment designs and classic silhouettes. We try to carry patterns that are available in a wide range of sizes, with clear instructions, and time-saving tutorials and tips—with the goal of making your sewing time easier and more productive. Ready to get inspired? Today we’re highlighting fun fall outfits featuring patterns by some of our favorite indie pattern designers—True Bias, Notches, and Closet Core—with incredible fabrics to match!
True Bias
True Bias designs the clothes we want to be wearing! With a collection of timeless wardrobe essentials, there’s a True Bias pattern for every season. We can’t wait to sew the new Blair Skirt in wide wale corduroy for fall, a perfect pairing with a Nikko Top in a wide rib knit. Dreaming of a comfy, cozy fall outfit that’s made entirely of knits? Choose your favorite bamboo/cotton/spandex jersey for a Nova Jumpsuit, and wear it with a Marlo in cotton sweater knit.

Notches
A recent addition to our pattern collection, Belgium-based Notches patterns feature everyday garments with interesting design details—unique clothes that are fun to sew and wear! Printed cotton/linen canvas is a wonderful choice for a pair of Tiki Trousers, and it’s even better with the Clara Shirt in a crisp cotton poplin. The Jordy Jacket is quickly becoming a shop favorite—sew one up in Japanese printed canvas for a cool fall look!

Closet Core
Closet Core patterns have been a part of our wardrobe for years, and we’re always delighted to hear about something new! The Fowler Barn Coat & Quilted Jacket is a recent addition to the collection, just in time for fall—make one in printed cotton/linen canvas for a unique look. The Ginger Jeans are a classic Closet Core pattern that’s as relevant today as when it was released—just add stretch denim! The Jenna Shirt is one of our favorite button-up patterns; make one up in shiny Giza sateen for a sleek, chic look.

how can we help?
We’ve taught you how to search our fabric collection by color, helped you launder your new fabric in preparation for sewing, and showed you how to add matching thread to your order—we’d love to help with even more of your questions whenever we can! If you have have questions about shopping on the site, matching fabrics from wherever you are, or how to get started making your dream Halloween costume, we’re here to help! Email us info@stonemountainfabric.com with a brief description of what you’re looking for, and we’ll be happy to advise!
One of the things we love most about indie sewing patterns is the freedom they give you to create a wardrobe that really feels like your own. Start with the same True Bias skirt, Notches jacket, or Closet Core shirt and give it to ten sewists, and chances are you’ll end up with ten completely different garments! Change the fabric, color, print, buttons, topstitching, or a little detail here and there, and suddenly you’ve made something nobody else has hanging in their closet. That is still one of our favorite things about sewing your own clothes—and perhaps why our list of “patterns we really need to make next” never seems to get any shorter.
At Stonemountain & Daughter Fabrics, we’ve been championing independent sewing pattern designers for decades, and we love bringing their creativity together with our carefully curated collection of apparel fabrics. Whether your fall sewing plans call for corduroy, stretch denim, cotton/linen canvas, Japanese fabrics, sweater knits, cotton poplin, or something wonderfully unexpected, we’ve done the searching and selecting so you can spend more time dreaming about what to make. And if you’re staring at an indie sewing pattern wondering which fabric will bring it to life, ask us! Helping sewists find that just-right pattern and fabric combination is one of the best parts of what we do, whether you’re visiting our Berkeley fabric store or shopping with us online.
So take a look through your closet, think about what you’d truly love to wear this fall, and make it yourself. Maybe it’s your first pair of handmade jeans, a fabulous jacket, an everyday shirt, or an entire head-to-toe outfit because apparently one project wasn’t enough! Explore our indie sewing patterns and fall apparel fabrics, try a designer you’ve never sewn before, and don’t be afraid to make their pattern completely your own. Your time and creativity are valuable—choose a pattern that excites you, fabric worthy of every stitch, and enjoy the wonderfully satisfying moment when someone asks where you got it and you get to say, “I made it!”
Thank You and Happy Sewing! 🍁
