Cotton + Steel – Cotton/Linen Canvas
Last week we shared a few beautiful prewashed linens, and today we’re back with even more linen and linen blend fabrics you’ll love wearing this summer! Linen is a wonderful choice for warm-weather clothing—it’s cool and breathable, as well as moisture-wicking and antimicrobial. It’s available in so many different colors, weights, weaves, and patterns that you’re sure to find a linen fabric to suit any garment you want to make! Choose a crisp 100% linenfor a wedding-guest dress, or a casual cotton/linen (as pictured above) for cool comfort any day of the week. We’ve got some lovely fabrics to share, and we’re delighted to introduce you to your next linen love!

linens & blends

This photo is a snapshot of the variety that our extensive linen & linen blendssection has to offer! Starting from the top, Mora Slub is a classic viscose/linen blend—light-midweight with a nubbly texture and a cool, fluid drape. It’s going to make a breezy Sauvie Sundress you’ll love wearing this summer. Next, a deadstock printed linen/cotton—this one is lightweight with nice stability from the cotton, so it’s a great match for The Ellsworth, which combines structured details with an oversized, boxy shape. Finally, an Italian designer deadstock linen with a lovely herringbone weave—it’s perfect for summer-weight jackets, pants, or the Austin Dress with its many buttons.

Chloe linen/viscose

We always talk about linen/viscose blends combining the best qualities of both fibers—the strength and texture of linen with the gorgeous, fluid drape of viscose. In the world of linen blends, Lady McElroy’s Chloe Linen/Viscose is truly something special! While it’s got the qualities we love in a linen/viscose blend, the Chloe fabric is super finely-woven, so it’s incredibly light and lovely. Pair this fabric with a pattern like the Lulee Dress & Skirt or the Endless Summer Shirt for the dreamiest summer look!

rayon/linen jersey

This fabric is everything we love about a rayon/linen blend, with a twist: it’s a knit! Rayon/linen jersey comes off the bolt with linen’s characteristic shine and slubs, but it’s not quite your favorite t-shirt… yet! Washing and drying transforms this knit into something wonderful—we laundered our swatch in warm water and dried it on low, which made the fabric feel even more soft and scrumptious (we recommend testing a swatch yourself, since all machines are different). This jersey has a pretty drape and a firm stretch, so it’s a nice choice for garments that are designed for both wovens and knits—we’ll happily pair it with the Salma Wrap, the Square Neck Top, and the Floreat Dress and Top.

fabric care

Linen and linen blends are ideal for garments since the fabric is so easy to care for: for best results, machine wash cold and hang to dry. We always recommend test-washing a swatch before laundering your yardage to make sure that you are happy with the result for your specific project!

To make any 100% linen fabric wrinkle less, follow these instructions from Sandra Betzina: Before washing, iron the fabric with the hottest, driest iron possible. Machine wash in hot water and tumble dry on high heat. Remove only when completely dry. This method will result in shrinkage, but small, soft folds will replace the hard creases usually associated with linen.
