If you’re starting to update your fall wardrobe and find yourself in search of the perfect fabric for everyday wear, don’t miss our collection of midweights! Not too light and not too heavy, midweights (5–10 ounces per square yard) are stable and strong. Wool, canvas, and Japanese solids are some our favorite midweight fabrics for fall, but we think you’ll find that they make excellent wardrobe essentials to wear year-round—these fabrics are perfect for jackets, pants, skirts, bags, and more!

One of our favorite things about fall is that it’s finally time to wear our favorite layering pieces—and this year, we can’t wait to get started on a new fall jacket! Our midweight wools and coatings are perfect for garments like the Beatrice Pea Coat, the Canton Moto Jacket, and the Thayer Jacket—these jackets are exactly what we want to wear in autumn and, with a few cozy layers, might also be a great match for winter where you live. To complete your wool jacket, select the lining fabric (we like silk or Bemberg rayon) that feels most comfortable to you!

While prints are definitely the stars of our Japanese imports section, our incredible Japanese solids are not to be missed! These unique fabrics feature textures, weaves, and treatments that make them stand out in a collection of wardrobe basics and add a little something extra to every outfit. We’ll use crinkle canvas for a pair of Mitchell Trousers, 13-ounce canvas for a mini-length Blair Skirt, and crisp cotton twill for The Nevis.

Canvas is one of our favorite midweight fabrics for all seasons: it’s sturdy, stable, and very easy to sew. We love its versatility, and we love the added possibilities of these cotton canvas prints! These fabrics work well for all kinds of garments—for fall, we have the Flâneur Pants, the Studio Tunic, and the Yvette Woven Dress on our must-sew list. Fall is a great time to treat yourself to a new tote! Extra-sturdy 13-ounce Japanese canvas is the perfect choice for a Poolside Tote to take on all your daily adventures.

If you’ve sewn with any type of woven fabric before, we think you’ll find working with midweights a breeze! Use Gutermann Sew-All Thread with a Universalor Denim Needle for smooth sewing. For interfacing, we recommend a fusible woven like Presto for apparel and a fusible non-woven like Pellon Craft-Fusefor bags. Not sure about the right notions for your specific project? Looking for a calming, meditative project or want to expand your handwork repertoire? Join Stonemountain & Daughter sales associate Kristen Takakuwa for a Learn Sashiko class with Hello Stitch on Sunday, October 11th! Sashiko is a form of decorative reinforcement stitching (aka functional embroidery) from Japan. While traditional sashiko was used to reinforce points of wear and repair tears, today, in addition to visible mending, sashiko is often used for decorative purposes or quilting. You will receive a kit of sashiko supplies as part of the class. Click below for more info!

There’s a reason we keep coming back to midweight fabrics: they’re the Goldilocks of the fabric world—not too light, not too heavy, but just right for so many things we actually want to sew and wear. A great pair of pants, an everyday skirt, a hardworking jacket, a favorite tote…these are the fabrics that can move easily from one project to the next and from fall straight through the rest of the year. Give us a beautiful cotton twill or textured Japanese canvas and suddenly our sewing list gets a little longer!

At Stonemountain & Daughter Fabrics, we’ve spent more than 45 years searching for fabrics that are worth the time and creativity you put into your sewing. Our collection of midweight apparel fabrics includes wool, cotton canvas, twill, denim, Japanese solids, linen blends, designer deadstock, and plenty of other special finds chosen for their quality, hand, durability, and sewing potential. Whether you’re shopping online or visiting our Berkeley fabric store, we’ve done the touching, comparing, and choosing for you so you can feel confident starting that jacket, pair of pants, skirt, or bag you’re hoping to use and love for years.

So if you’re wondering what to sew next, start in the middle! Explore our midweight fabrics, pull out a favorite indie sewing pattern, and see what combination gets your imagination going. These wonderfully versatile fabrics are sturdy enough to work hard, comfortable enough for everyday wear, and interesting enough to make even a simple pattern feel special. And if one piece of midweight fabric somehow turns into plans for a jacket, pants, and a bag…well, we’re probably not the people who are going to talk you out of it.

Thank You and Happy Sewing!
