Premium Japanese Selvedge Denim for Garment Sewing 

Have you had the pleasure of sewing a garment with selvedge denim? Denim lovers can’t get enough of this special fabric—woven in Japan, it’s one of our most sought-after designer deadstock finds. We’re delighted to have two lovely qualities of selvedge denim in stock, just in time for your spring sewing!

What makes selvedge denim so special? Unlike conventional denim, selvedge denim is tightly-woven on traditional shuttle looms, giving it a narrow width and self-finished woven edges, or selvedges. Because these selvedges are woven into the fabric, they’re super strong and won’t fray. Selvedges often include a contrasting colored thread—historically an indicator of fiber content, and now associated with the clothing brand the fabric is woven for. Designers and home sewists love using the selvedge as a design element—as a pop of color on jeans cuffs or jacket facings, on the edge of yokes and pockets, and more.

Like all denim, selvedge denim can be made in a range of colors, weaves, and weights. Our 7 oz. selvedge denim is a medium weight with a stable hand and a semi-structured drape. This denim is the perfect weight for a pair of barrel leg pants like the Chanterelle Pants, and for layering pieces like the Ilford Jacket and The Foreman. We also love this fabric for garments like skirts, jumpsuits, and jumpers.

In contrast, our 11 oz. selvedge denim is quite heavy and stiff. It’s the type of fabric that will break in slowly over time, developing creases and color variation according to how the garment fits your body. This denim is special because it was woven with deep indigo threads for both the warp and weft, giving it a super dark color on both the face and the back. This fabric is a wonderful choice for garments like the Stevie Jean Jacket and The Paynter, and of course for rigid jeans like the WBM Jeans.

When you purchase selvedge denim, you’ll want to evaluate the fabric’s color and hand, and decide if you plan to wash it or not, and if so, how often. In the interest of preserving denim’s look and feel, some denim lovers wash their jeans very rarely—something to consider! If you decide to launder your selvedge denim, we recommend a cool wash with like colors and air drying to avoid shrinking and wear.

Our 11 oz. selvedge denim is the perfect fabric for a pair of Morgan Jeans, but what to wear with it? Bright colors are a lovely counterpoint to deep indigo denim, so we’ll choose a favorite yarn-dyed cotton for an eye-catching Puff Shirt and a pretty shade of Fineline Twill for a cool Poncho Shirt.

We love the versatility of our 7 oz. selvedge denim—its weight is a great match for a trouser pattern like The Pegs to wear this spring and summer. This denim is a gorgeous shade of navy that will look amazing with warm colors like orange and gold, so we’ll choose a few favorite cottons for sunny tops like the Wren Blouse and The Ellsworth.
