 Radiant rayons for warm weather
If you’re curious about sewing with rayon, your timing couldn’t be better—this gorgeous fabric is perfect for warm weather! Made from natural cellulose fibers (which are derived from wood pulp), rayon fabric is cool to the touch with a lovely, fluid drape. Lightweight rayon wovens like challis and crepe are ideal for warm-weather dresses, tops, skirts, and other garments that are designed to have drape and motion. Rayon knits have a smooth hand and a slinky drape to add comfort and style to your summer looks!
Rayon is a staple of our fashion fabric collection, and rightly so! It’s available in so many colors, prints, and patterns, and it’s super easy to wear and care for.

There are so many ways to wear rayon knits, but you really can’t go wrong with a simple tank or tee! We love patterns like the Chantal Swing Tank Top and the Skyline Tee for wear-anywhere wardrobe basics. If you’re looking for a warm-weather dress that’s as cool and comfortable as it is stylish, the Zoey Dress is a simple sewing project with results that are simply spectacular!

When you’re working with a rayon woven like challis, crepe, or twill, you’ll want to search for patterns that require a lightweight woven fabric with a bit of drape—think summer skirts, dresses, and tops. These flowing fabrics are wonderful when paired with beautiful, versatile patterns like the Montana Midi Dress, the Aalto Dress, and the Jenna Shirt & Shirtdress.

title-how to sew it

Rayon’s smooth, fluid texture can make it a challenge to sew, so we’ve gathered our best tips for sewing success! Pre-wash and dry your rayon (here’s a link to our complete fabric care guide with lots of great info!). For best results, use an all-purpose polyester thread and a fresh sewing machine needle. We recommend using the smallest size needle available, whether it’s Universal (suitable for all fabric types), Microtex (extra sharp), or Ballpoint (perfect for knits). Presto Sheer Fusible is a great interfacing for lightweight rayon wovens, while rayon knits are best paired with our Fuse A Knit Fusible Tricot Interfacing.
