So, you’re thinking about sewing a pair of pants, but you’re not quite ready to take the plunge? We recommend making a short detour and sewing a pair of shorts! Shorts are a great way to practice your sewing skills and perfect your fit before investing in the yardage you’ll need for a full pair of pants. And it’s prime time for wearing shorts—your timing couldn’t be better! Today we’ve gathered a selection of fabrics for all your shorts-sewing needs. We look forward to the next chapter in your sewing story!

We love a crisp stretch cotton for preppy-inspired summer shorts! These plaids and checks are a nice weight for patterns like Dani, Pietra, and Jedediah. Pair your shorts with a button-up shirt like Kalle or a simple tee like Laurent for an effortlessly cool picnic look. Croquet, anyone?
A yarn-dyed fabric is a nice way to add pattern and texture into your look, and an opaque yarn-dye is a fantastic choice for shorts! We love patterns like The Assembly Line Culottes and the Rose Pants, which show off this fabric’s texture and drape nicely. And a heavier yarn-dye like the Warp & Weft Heirloom Chore Coat makes a nice coordinating Ilford or September jacket.
Cotton canvas, oxford, and twill are perfect fabrics for everyday wear—they’re so easy to wear and care for! We love a canvas fabric for the Lander Pant, and an oxford or twill for the Decades of Style Boardwalk Duet. Our new collection of Kobe Twill is the perfect choice for a pair of Wardrobe By Me Cargo Shorts —so comfortable and stylish for summertime!
Dress shorts are a fun option for a special occasion! For a fancier short, choosing the right pattern is key—for this lovely Japanese cotton dobby , we’ll choose a tailored trouser pattern like the Guise Pants and the Calder Pants & Shorts pattern is a great match for our designer deadstock Polyester/Viscose Stretch Crepe . Make a matching Heather Blazer and you’ve got a great outfit!

In honor of Me Made May, we’re taking every opportunity to showcase the amazing outfits made and worn by the Stonemountain & Daughter team. For our final newsletter of the month, we’re sharing two great looks by staff members Amy and Liz.

Amy wears a Very Easy, Very Vogue pattern in a lightweight Japanese cotton. Amy’s dress is a perfect example of why fitting a new pattern using quilting cotton is a great choice—it’s easy to sew and can make a gorgeous wearable muslin! This outfit by Liz is a perfect example of her innovative sewing skills: Liz wears a Roscoe Dress made out of vintage table linens paired with a denim vest that’s made from a hack of the Hughes Dress pattern. So clever!
