As we come to the close of our anniversary month, we find ourselves reflecting on everything that has shaped Stonemountain & Daughter over the past 45 years. Each week we’ve shared fabrics we love—from cotton and linenwovens, to designer deadstock, to knits—together these fabrics tell the story of a shop built on curiosity, creativity, and an appreciation for beautiful materials. These fabrics are what inspire all of us to keep creating.
Being an independent fabric store that began in 1981 and continues to grow and evolve today is something we do not take for granted. We have embraced change along the way—building strong, lasting relationships throughout the fabric industry, investing in technology, and creating a world-class website supported by a dedicated team. At the same time, we’ve stayed true to what matters most: offering thoughtfully-curated fabrics, patterns, and notions, and providing the kind of service that only a hands-on fabric store can offer.
Community has always been at the heart of what we do. From supporting local schools and keeping creative jobs in Berkeley, to our Brightest Little Star volunteer program providing handmade blankets and scent dolls for NICU families, we believe that fabric can connect us in meaningful ways. When you shop with us, you are supporting independent pattern designers, notion makers, fabric mills, and small businesses across the country and around the world. Each project you make helps sustain a network of creative people who are all dedicated to keeping sewing alive and thriving.
As the era of big chain fabric stores shifts, we see a renewed opportunity for independent shops to grow and flourish. We are incredibly grateful to still be here, one of the few full-service fabric stores of our kind, and to be part of a community that values creativity, quality, and connection. Designer deadstock is one of the shop’s most dynamic and inspiring collections, and has been since 1981! While the fabrics in the collection change with the trends, the long-standing relationships we’ve built with our sources in the New York and Los Angeles fashion districts allow us to keep inspiring deadstock fabrics in the shop, season after season. Our sources find the very best of deadstock fabric—from one-of-a-kind designer pieces to quality wardrobe basics—to help build our ever-evolving collection. This spring we’re feeling inspired by crisp cotton shirting and light, airy voile—wonderful choices for a Grainline Alder Shirtdress or a Friday Pattern Company Butano Button Up.

One of our all-time favorite designer deadstock finds is our collection of sandwashed silks from indie fashion label Amour Vert. We were able to stock these beautiful fabrics directly from the label’s production line, giving these fabrics a new life and giving you the opportunity to transform gorgeous silks into the garments of your dreams! We have a nice group of these sandwashed silks in stock, perfect for patterns like the Sew House Seven Sauvie Sundress and the Chalk and Notch Farrah Blouse & Dress.

Designed in California by a family-run business, the Fableism fabric collection has quickly become a shop favorite—high-quality, yarn-dyed cotton fabrics in incredible colors that are perfect for quilting as well as for apparel. We love Fableism paired with garment patterns like the Closet Core Azure Dress, Top & Skirt and the Sew Liberated Hinterland Dress—and many more!
Every sewing project is even better with indie notions! Feral Notions rulers are not only sparkly and fun to use, they’re also designed, laser-cut, and engraved by Caitlin in her garage. We love the special finishing touch that garment labels add to a project, so we’re thrilled to stock unique, embroidered garment labels designed by indie businesses like Sarah Hearts and Matchy Matchy Sewing Club.

When we step back and look at it all, what stands out most is not just the fabric, but what it becomes. Every yard that leaves the shop turns into something personal—something worn, gifted, lived in, and loved. That transformation is what keeps this work so meaningful for us. It’s not just about what’s on the bolt, it’s about what you create from it.
There is something really special about being part of a community of makers who choose to slow down, make thoughtfully, and invest in things that last. In a world that moves quickly, sewing offers a different pace—one that values care, creativity, and connection. We see that every day in the shop and through everything you share with us.
As we look ahead, we feel excited and hopeful for what’s to come. New fabrics, new ideas, and new generations of sewists discovering the joy of making their own clothing. We are honored to be part of that journey with you, and we don’t take it lightly.
