There’s a cool breeze in the evening air, so autumn is surely on the way! We’re getting ready for the season by stocking up on lots of comfy, cozy fabrics we think you’ll love wearing in autumn, winter, and beyond. First up, our new collection of fluffy, fuzzy faux fur and sherpa. These polyester fabrics are super soft and warm, so they’ll be most fun (and functional) as outerwear: choose patterns like the Zip Up Sweater and the Pogonip Pullover for everyday layers, and the Hovea Coat for a true fall showstopper!

ponte knits
Smooth and sturdy with excellent stretch and recovery, ponte knit is a fantastic choice for office wear that’s comfortable as well as professional—the ultimate secret pajamas! Lighter-weight ponte is great for for countless tops, skirts, and dresses from the Grafton pattern pack—it’s a true wardrobe-builder with lots of design options to make every garment your own. We love thicker ponte knits for bottoms like the Parker Ponte Pant—a great piece to level-up your sewing skills and your fall wardrobe!

big rib knits
You’ve been asking about it, and we’re thrilled to announce that heavy cotton/spandex ribbing is now available! Thick and stretchy, it’s the perfect finishing touch for extra-cozy sweatshirts like The Sidney and the Stanton Hoodie. How about transforming the Cropped Jacket into a cute bomber jacket? Line the collar, swap the woven fabric waistband for ribbing, and add some ribbed cuffs as well! Helpful hint: cut the ribbing slightly smaller than the pattern piece and pull the rib as you sew in order to achieve a perfect fit.

stretch velour
With the look of velvet and the strength of polyester, stretch velour is a wonderful way to add a bit of comfy luxury to your look. Plush Velour Deluxemakes perfectly luxurious loungewear—think simple sweatshirts with matching Roxanne Cargo Sweatpants. For fancy fall looks, choose Kitty Velour: with gorgeous drape and shine, it’s an absolute dream for dresses like the Throwback Dress and the Elsa Sleeveless Dress.

sewing with knits
New to sewing with knits? No serger? Not a problem! Most sewing machines have an overlock or elastic overlock stitch that will make stitching knit fabrics a breeze. Using a rotary cutter will help you cut knit fabrics accurately. You can sew knits with your favorite all-purpose thread. To ensure successful sewing, you’ll want to invest in some ball-point sewing machine needles specially designed for knit fabrics. And if you’d prefer to use a serger, we’ve got the needles, threads, and accessories for that, too!
Many thanks to you, our community of sewists and makers, for voting for us—we’re proud to announce that the East Bay Express has named Stonemountain & Daughter Best Fabric Store in their Best of the East Bay 2025 issue! As we move deeper into fall, cozy knits really shine—they’re the fabrics we reach for when we want comfort, warmth, and style in one. Whether you’re sewing a classic ponte pant, a ribbed hoodie, or a velour dress that feels as good as it looks, these knits offer endless opportunities to refresh your handmade wardrobe. Pair your favorite knit project with a jacket or bag from our recent Sew Cool for School spotlight, and you’ll be set with versatile, handmade staples to carry you through the season.
This fall, we’ve been celebrating fabrics that feel good—soft gauze and cozy terry in Sew Soft, airy linens in Cool Summer, and now knits that bring comfort and polish. These fabrics all share something special: they give us the chance to create garments that are wearable every day, but still deeply personal. With each stitch, you’re making pieces that reflect your style and your story, while learning skills you’ll return to again and again.
And the inspiration doesn’t stop here! Up next, we’ll be turning the spotlight to Fabric in Motion—rayon and silk for fall. These flowing, drapey fabrics bring movement and elegance to your wardrobe, with prints and solids that shine on dresses, blouses, and skirts. Stay tuned for new arrivals, pattern inspiration, and sewing tips to help you make the most of these graceful fabrics. In the meantime, share your cozy knit creations with us using #StonemountainFabric—we can’t wait to see how you’re sewing for fall!
Thank you and Happy Sewing!
