Sewing your own wardrobe basics feels like a superpower, especially when you stretch your skills to include sewing with knits and jerseys! Stable midweight knits like sweatshirt fleece and French terry are easy to sew and make excellent layering pieces for year-round. We love midweight cotton blend knits for casual wardrobe staples like the Boyfriend Sweater, the Cece Joggers & Shorts, and the Mile End Sweatshirt.

Finding the perfect vintage t-shirt can be a challenge, so we’re super excited about making our own with the new Sportsball Tee pattern! Whether you’re a big sports fan or just love retro sports style, this pattern from Ann Tilley Handmade is a fun sew and a great match for our cotton/spandex jerseys. Make one in honor of your favorite sports team (go Valkyries!), in your favorite colors, or even incorporating a fun print!

Now that autumn has arrived we can’t get enough of our cozy layers, and lightweight bamboo/cotton terry is exactly what we want to be wearing these days! A little heavier than a t-shirt with a smooth jersey face and a soft, looped back, this bamboo/cotton terry is a wonderful choice for light layers like the Verity Knit Top, the Caroline Raglan Tunic, and the Pearl Cardigan.

New to sewing with knits? No serger? Not a problem! Most sewing machines have an overlock or elastic overlock stitch that will make stitching knit fabrics a breeze. Using a rotary cutter will help you cut knit fabrics accurately. You can sew knits with your favorite all-purpose thread. To ensure successful sewing, you’ll want to invest in some ball-point sewing machine needles specially designed for knit fabrics. And if you’d prefer to use a serger, we’ve got the needles, threads, and accessories for that, too!

As the days get shorter and the evenings cool, there is something comforting about settling in with a soft knit and watching it turn into a favorite everyday piece. Knits invite you to slow down just a little, trust your hands, and enjoy the rhythm of sewing something you’ll reach for again and again. These midweight gems bridge the seasons beautifully and keep your handmade wardrobe feeling fresh.

With the holidays on the horizon, it is the perfect moment to make a few pieces that feel effortless and warm. Just like in our last blog where we explored the beauty of midweights, these fabrics keep proving how versatile they can be. A simple tee, a classic raglan, or a cozy cardigan becomes a thoughtful gift or a well loved staple that adds comfort to busy days.

And as we wrap up the year, sewing with knits is a lovely reminder that handmade doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful. A yard or two of a good French terry or bamboo blend can spark a whole new wave of creativity. We hope you find something in our shelves that inspires your next soft and easy make. Happy sewing and enjoy the season.

Thank you and happy sewing!
