Add a flair to your sewing with textured fabric!
While we usually prefer to explore fabrics by fiber content, pattern, or color, this week we’re feeling super inspired by fabric textures! Texture is created by weaving (or knitting) fibers together to make a fabric, but that’s just the beginning—the feel of the fibers themselves contribute to the overall texture, as do any special washing treatments applied to the finished fabric. From bouclé to brocade, there’s a whole world of texture out there to explore!

One of the things we love most about textured fabrics is that they add a dimension to your wardrobe that can’t be achieved with color alone. Do we have any suggestions for what to do with textured fabrics? We’re so glad you asked! In the photo above, we love a velvety corduroy for a pair of Isle Jeans, a crinkly-soft double gauze for a comfy Roscoe Blouse, and of course a nubbly brocade for a beautiful version of The Miller vest.

Our sunny yellow Japanese cotton dobby has the perfect texture and crisp hand for the stunning Jo Dress. Go for a more relaxed look with a Lyra Dressin our deadstock linen/cotton—this one has a classic gingham pattern with some tiny woven details hidden within the grid. You’ve gotta stay cozy, so we suggest pairing either fall dress with a toasty-warm layer like the Cambria Duster in a loopy sweater knit.

Where did you get that gorgeous coat?! Be ready, because if you sew yourself a statement coat in jumbo plaid bouclé, you’ll be hearing that often! (P.S. the Nova Coat is our go-to pattern for any and all dramatic winter coat needs) What to wear with that coat? Consider a vibrant stretch velour for a Nova Jumpsuit (no relation), and stir up some sophistication with textured cottons in black for a tailored piece like the Tie Bow Blouse.
