Linen, a fabric for all seasons - banner

Woven from flax fibers, linen is durable, breathable, and dries quickly, so it’s ideal for hot days and humid weather—it’s well-known as a perfect summer fabric. But did you know that because of these qualities, linen is also a fantastic fabric choice for layering in autumn, winter, and spring? Whether you wear it alone or with your favorite layers, linen is a versatile, year-round fabric you’ll love sewing with and wearing. If you’re choosing a fabric for your next sewing project, you really can’t go wrong with linen!

an ancient fabric for modern times
Flax facts: did you know that by wearing linen, you’re a part of a textile legacy going back tens of thousands of years? Amazing! While our fashions may be quite different from those of the ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamians, wearing clothing made of linen is something we all have in common, and that’s pretty cool to think about.

So, what’s a sewist to make with linen in these modern times? We love creating garments that can be styled for multi-season wear, so we’re looking at linen with that in mind. 100% linen has a nice drape and a bit of structure that’s perfect for the Evelyn SkirtThe Omilie Dress, and the Regalia Blouse. Linen/rayon blends have a flowy drape that we love for garments like The Assembly Line Oversized Shirt and the Saturday Skirt Set.

Cruise washed linen was an addition to the shop in 2023, and we’re big fans of its versatility! It’s got a nice weight and drape, so it’s a perfect match for overalls like the Burnside Bibs, a chore jacket like the Ilford, and for home goods like napkins. A striped linen would make a pretty Sauvie Sundress (in cooler weather, layer it with leggings and a cozy sweater!). Sandwashed linen twill is soft yet sturdy, so it’s a great match for a pair of Magic Pants or Mitchell Trousers to wear season after season.

While you’re browsing, be sure to check out our linen blends! Why choose a fiber blend? Combining linen and rayon creates a strong, breathable fabric with a beautiful drape. Linen/cotton blends are durable and practical, perfect for everyday wear. While our collection of linen and linen blends will give you lots of great sewing inspiration, you can see a selection of linen garments made by our Stonemountain staff here!

linen care
Linen and linen blends are ideal for garments since the fabric is so easy to care for: for best results, machine wash cold and hang to dry. To make any 100% linen fabric wrinkle less, follow these instructions from Sandra Betzina: Before washing, iron the fabric with the hottest, driest iron possible. Machine wash in hot water and tumble dry on high heat. Remove only when completely dry. This method will result in shrinkage, but small, soft folds will replace the hard creases usually associated with linen. To find our suggestions for laundering all kinds of fibers, bookmark our Fabric Care Guide.
