Our long and treasured history with silk fabric!
As we have shared in our newsletter, blogs, posts on social, and through our inventory over the years, silk has been a big part of the shop since our very beginning. Today Suzan, owner and daughter of Stonemountain and Daughter Fabrics, shares the shop’s long history with silk fabric!

For thousands of years, silk fabric has been treasured and traded around the world. The production of silk spread beyond China to Korea, Japan, India, and Persia. With the advent of factories in Europe in the 1300s, silk became a major part of Italy’s textile production. While the silk produced by the European luxury textile industry was mainly for aristocrats and royalty, the invention of mechanical looms allowed for the production of silk for clothing and fashion to reach a broader audience. Today, silk remains a favorite luxury fabric for all seasons—its quality, whether for everyday wear or special occasion clothing, is unmatched. Although the American silk industry has been hit hard these last few years with strong tariffs in China and price increases worldwide, silk continues to thrive—no other fabric compares to its softness, feel, luster, shine, strength, and elegance.

For over four decades, Stonemountain & Daughter Fabrics has been importing silk from European designers in Italy through our longtime friends in New York. In the past, these jobbers would import designer leftovers, or deadstock, by the container full—and we would often get first pick. In the 1980s, we would fly in shipments from NY filled with silk, wool, and linen from top designers like Ellen Tracey. This continued until 2020, when the pandemic shut down the Italian fabric industry and devastated the NY jobbers and fabric trade. This combined with rising warehouse rents in NY was a big challenge, and many in the industry went out of business. The cost of getting a shipping container from Italy also skyrocketed by an unimaginable percentage. With the Italian factories shut down for safety reasons during the pandemic, the surplus of designer deadstock was sold out and our connection to their unique and well-priced wools, silks, and linens dried up.

Not giving up, we put the word out to our friends who remain in the industry and we have now opened up exclusive new channels of silk, wool, and linen from Europe. Come see and feel the quality of these unique bolts. As with all designer deadstock, each piece is limited in quantity and most likely not able to be reordered. In the words of our founder, my father, Bob, “What you see is what you get, if you get it when you see it!”

Like you, we only want the best in fabric—so we only sell the best. That’s why it’s easy for us to stand behind every yard of fabric we sell. Things are surely different today than they were in years past, but we are still here! We’re having fun exploring the new market, sourcing the very best fabrics in the world for garment-making, and bringing them to Berkeley for you.
