Sew Eco Friendly Fabrics!
In honor of Earth Day, today we’re highlighting our collection of eco-friendly fabrics. Stonemountain & Daughter has made a commitment to sourcing eco-friendly fabrics for the shop as often as possible. While it is our hope that the textile industry will adopt even more sustainable production practices in the future, we are encouraged to see that our collection currently includes over 600 fabrics! This group includes high-quality, long lasting fabrics with organic and other certifications, as well as fabrics that are made of more sustainable fibers like Ecovero viscosehemp, and bamboo
what do we mean by sustainable?
Sustainability can refer to the origin and quality of the materials as well as the manufacturing processes used to create a fabric. Sustainable fabrics may carry certifications such as GOTS (certification of organic materials, with manufacturing according to ecological and social standards) or OEKO-TEX (materials and process have been tested and confirmed free of harmful chemicals), or a fabric’s content may be labeled organic. Our eco-friendly fabric category includes all of these, so it is a great place to start if you’re looking for a fabric with organic fiber content or a specific certification. This collection is consistently growing, and we always include any information we have about the materials and certifications in the product listing.

Remember, working with eco-friendly fabrics is just one part of a sustainable sewing practice—there are many ways to practice sustainability! You can sew sustainably by making only what you need, by upcycling old garments or materials, by sewing with zero-waste patterns, by using quality materials to create lasting wardrobe staples, and by making a commitment to mending well-loved garments before eventually repurposing them.

Made from wood fibers, EcoVero viscose has a smaller ecological footprint than traditional viscose, using less water and producing less carbon dioxide. We love seeing these bold EcoVero viscose prints from some of our favorite suppliers! These fabrics are super-smooth and cool to the touch with a beautiful, fluid drape—they’re perfect for patterns like the Holyoke Maxi Dress and Skirt and the Jenna Shirt and Shirtdress, to wear now and year-round!

Organic Cotton is the eco-friendly fabric we get asked about the most! These midweight fabrics are made with organic cotton and are perfect for garments you’ll want to wear season after season—we love the nubbly texture of barkcloth for the Ilford Jacket, and sturdy, soft Organic Cotton for The Harlene. These organic cotton fabrics will also work well for everyday bags like the Sandhill Sling and the Super Tote.
