We are very excited to introduce our first Stonemountain Sewist, Cris Wood! We started the Stonemountain Sewists program to work with the talented members of our community and show off some of the many ways to use our fabric. We’ve been longtime fans of Cris and her inspiring me-mades. She has a great eye for matching up fabric with patterns and her latest garment is no exception!
For her Stonemountain Sewists project, Cris chose to make the Wiksten Haori with our Mora Slub in Midnight and Textured Yarn Dyed Cotton – Squares in Natural—two of our most popular fabrics, and with good reason. Mora Slub is a lovely viscose/linen blend with amazing drape and texture. And our Textured Yarn Dyed Cotton is just as it sounds (and more!). It’s as easy to work with as quilting cotton, but has a nice soft drape that makes it perfect for garment making.
Cris often uses bright colors and bold prints in her makes, so we were honestly a little surprised to see her pick two neutral solids! But it made complete sense once we saw it all come together into a super versatile and reversible jacket.
Why did you choose these fabrics?
I chose these two fabrics for their textures and high contrast. Because this jacket is reversible, I wanted to be able to have two totally different looks when I flipped it around.
What do you especially like about the fabric?
The Mora Slub in particular has a gorgeous drape. The texture adds an earthiness that I am drawn to. The Textured Yarn Dyed Cotton was especially easy to work with: easy to cut accurately, no fraying and doesn’t shift while sewing. The waffle texture is so playful, too.
How did you pre-treat/launder the fabric?
I washed them both separately in the washing machine with a small amount of detergent on regular setting.
What size of the Wiksten Haori did you make?
Size M
Did you make any modifications?
It’s not exactly a mod, but I opted to use the lining fabric for both the outer and inner collar because I intended to wear the collar flat instead of folded.
Is this garment your typical style? How will it fit into your wardrobe?
This garment is absolutely my style! Soft, oversized and versatile. I like pieces that can be worn with jeans as easily as a more formal dress or pant. I love a statement jacket!
